The Kardashians, Sarah Hyland and Lydia Hearst Toast Cosmopolitan’s 50th Birthday

October 13, 2015

With five members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan in tow, Cosmopolitan learned a thing or two about owning its past and getting camera-ready at its 50th anniversary party.

On Monday night at Ysabel in West Hollywood, editor in chief Joanna Coles welcomed matriarch Kris Jenner and all of her daughters, except for model-of-the-moment Kendall, who was in China. The ubiquitous oversharers appear on the cover of the magazine’s November issue, which lauded them as “America’s First Family.” On a pink carpet, they were undoubtedly the main attraction for guests including Sarah Hyland, Kelly Osbourne, Katie Lowes, Aja Naomi King, Julianne Hough, Caroline Vreeland, Zoey Deutch and Aimee Garcia.

“Who isn’t a fan of the Kardashians?” asked Leona Lewis. “They’re everywhere.”

Lydia Hearst, scion of the publishing company that owns Cosmopolitan, viewed them as a new generation of media stars. “It’s pretty inspiring that they literally are not afraid to be themselves,” she said. “They’re all about transparency and showing who they are.”

However, the Kardashians’ usual transparency turned opaque after their arrival at the party. As Kris fulfilled her duties chatting to TV cameras, Kourtney and Kim quietly walked away and waited for younger sisters Khloé and Kylie to arrive. WWD slipped a question to Khloé, who politely said she wasn’t doing interviews. Social media was the exception; Kim used Snapchat inside of the party. Their publicist mentioned they were taking a break but would return shortly. They did, but it wasn’t to discuss wanderlust or new business ventures. The “Keeping Up with The Kardashians” stars posed for a family portrait, then made a dash for the eatery.

Inside, Kris maintained the spotlight by giving a toast to the magazine. “On behalf of the girls and myself, it has been such an honor to be on the cover of the 50th anniversary of Cosmopolitan,” she said. “This is one of the most exciting partnerships to have. I grew up with Cosmopolitan and my girls have been reading it [too]. We’re so proud to be here.”

The love was mutual as Coles was also happy to see them. “To have five out of six Kardashians is an extraordinary thing,” she said.

In regards to the controversy surrounding the cover title, Coles said, “I think if you added it all up, they are the family that most of us spend the most time with. And we were being tongue-in-cheek when we talked about them being the First Family. On good authority, the real First Family found it rather amusing and have no intention of giving up the Lincoln Bedroom yet to the Kardashians. But if Kanye runs, as he’s promising to do in 2020, then we will look pretty freaking smart.”

Coles and her team can certainly consider themselves ambitious, what with whispers of a new television series in the works. “All I can say is there are a lot of people from NBC here right now, and we’re excited to have Sarah Watson who’s going to be writing the series.”

For those who don’t spend hours studying IMDB, Watson is the writer and producer of shows such as “Parenthood.” Stay tuned for what could turn out to be “Keeping Up With Cosmopolitan.”

Teen Vogue Parties With Young Hollywood

October 04, 2015

Per back to school tradition, Teen Vogue celebrated its 13th annual Young Hollywood issue Friday night with a house party in Beverly Hills.

“I feel like I know everyone now because I’ve been coming for so many years,” “Modern Family’s” Nolan Gould said. “It’s kind of out of a dream where I can walk into the party and know everyone. I’m like the guy in the movie that walks in and is high-fiving everybody.”

Among the fledging stars who appear in the issue were “Dope” actor Shameik Moore; Mackenzie Foy of “Interstellar,” and Kiernan Shipka, who said, “I had a ball the entire shoot. We just got to know people further and just chill and spend the day together.”

Since there’s not too much drinking going on, the highlight of the party is always the musical performances. The opening act, Alessia Cara, had wise words for the young crowd: “This song is about nostalgia and wishing I can stay a certain age, because growing up sucks. I hope you guys can all enjoy this song and live in the moment,” she said before launching into her hit “Seventeen.”

Cheers followed from the crowd, who included Jack Kilmer, Kaia Gerber, Halston Sage, Yara Shahidi, Victoria Justice, Maddie Ziegler, Sarah Hyland, Rowan Blanchard and fellow performer Tove Lo, who squeezed the party into her packed tour schedule. “We’re getting on the bus tonight, going to San Francisco, just touring for this month, and then I’m working on my next album,” she said.

However, the party wasn’t over. Moore showcased his footwork skills as fellow “Dope” cast mate Quincy Brown DJ’d the party, which eventually resulted in a dance off between the two.

“I know it’s a young crowd and I’m an adult,” Brown said. “It’s a lot of teenagers in here, but that doesn’t mean anything. I know how to play universal music that sounds good and feels good. I just want to get people singing and having a good time.”

2015 Amazon Prime Emmy Awards Party: Celebrating ‘Transparent’ Victory

September 21, 2015

For many celebrities, life after dark seems to be composed of incessant fetes, especially after an event like the  67th Primetime Emmys, when there are plenty of parties to hit, from HBO to Fox to AMC.

Amazon Prime put on its own after party for the first time, a good move since the streaming video network’s “Transparent” nabbed two awards for Best Directing for a Comedy Series and Best Lead Actor. However, the carefree nightlife is just another Hollywood illusion, according to “Transparent” star Carrie Brownstein. As she arrived at the post-Emmy celebration at The Standard, Downtown L.A, she said, “You know what? I go right back to shooting ‘Portlandia,’ so not a lot of decompression will be happening tonight.”

For castmate Judith Light, the schedule was even tighter. “I got in last night at midnight,” she said. “I’m rehearsing a play in New York with Keira Knightley. They let me out just for this, but I have to get up at 4 a.m. So I’m looking forward to kissing everybody, congratulating everybody, and going home to bed.”

Among those who could stay up late was 16-year-old Emily Robinson. “I’m so excited to see all of my friends, the cast, crew, and everyone who made this experience awesome,” she said. But in order to catch them, she’d have to move swiftly. Both Jill Soloway and Jeffrey Tambor, who were greeted with applause as they arrived on the red carpet, carried their awards straight to the rooftop soiree while uttering apologies. “Oh I’m so sorry, we have to go,” said Soloway. “We’ve got to go in, we’ve got to go in,” said Tambor. Inside, a few hundred people were waiting with Champagne to toast the winners.

“I’ve actually played Jeffrey Tambor’s love interest twice,” said Amy Aquino. “So I’m really excited to see him and congratulate him.” Amy Landecker had plans to make a beeline straight for Soloway. “To see her being the only woman in those categories tonight is incredible,” she said. “I’m just so struck by her. She’s changing the landscape of TV.”

Kiernan Shipka, Sophie Turner Attend BAFTA L.A. 2015 Pre-Emmy Tea Party

September 20, 2015

The British invasion in Hollywood was a welcome one on Saturday afternoon at BAFTA’s annual tea party at the SLS Hotel. “We get to bring the essence of Britain over, show you what we’re all about really,” said “Gossip Girl” actor Ed Westwick.

“Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner called it one of his favorite events. “It’s fun to stop by to interact with our British counterparts and also I’m a fan of a lot of these people,” he said, adding, “I’m a coffee drinker and so are most people in Britain. But it’s genteel, old-fashioned, and well-mannered and I like that.” Among Weiner’s peers was fellow scribe Julian Fellowes, creator of “Downton Abbey.” “It’s always fun to me,” said Fellowes. “I mean, I’m not one of those who has to come to L.A. to spend all my time with Brits, but still it is quite fun to have a bit of a reunion in the middle of this incredibly Hollywood event.”

On proper high-tea etiquette, “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner said, “I’m not very good at that kind of stuff. I’m British, but I always kind of slurp my tea, spilling it down me. I met the Queen and I wasn’t very good at that, either.” Luckily, the high temperatures gave her the option to sip a tall glass of water instead along with cast mate Gwendoline Christie. But Kiernan Shipka had another request. “I hope they have iced tea because it’s quite hot out,” she said. One who didn’t shy away from a teacup was first-time Emmy nominee Lorraine Toussaint, who said, “I love BAFTA because I’m secretly a Brit; I’m a colonized creature from the Caribbean. I really do tea every day and it really is highly ritualized. I warm my milk and I warm the cup and the pot. You’ve got to keep it hot. There’s nothing worse than tepid tea.”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Goldwyn, Ashley Madekwe and Audi Pre-Party for Emmys 2015

September 20, 2015

Festivities for the67th Primetime Emmy Awards started Thursday with Audi’s annual pre-Emmy bash at Cecconi’s in West Hollywood. “It’s the event that everyone goes to,” said Kat Graham, as guests Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Colin Egglesfield, Niecy Nash and Tony Goldwyn sent flashbulbs popping on the austere white carpet.

“Salem” star Ashley Madekwe agreed. “Yes, I love this party and I do like freaking out when I see my actors that I love. I saw Olivia Pope’s dad [actor Joe Morton] two years ago and I told him that I was obsessed. I was like, ‘Excuse me, I think you’re amazing, you’re so wonderful.’ He didn’t reply; I think he thought I was coming on to him.”

Although the parties are a whirlwind, some of the biggest stars plan to take a slower approach come Sunday. “I’ll hit the farmer’s market real quick and try to take it easy because it’s a really big day,” said Louis-Dreyfus. Khandi Alexander, a double nominee for “Bessie” and her work on “Scandal,” asked, “Is it Thursday? It’s been two weeks of nonstop, so I’m just going to wake up and take it as it goes. It happens so fast that I just breathe and go, ‘OK, another fabulous day, more great makeup, lovely people, breathe and let’s go.’”

The Sunday script will be slightly different for her “Scandal” costar Tony Goldwyn. “I have to work at 5 a.m. the next day, so I’ll make dinner for my daughter and watch the Emmys on the couch with her,” he said. Madekwe said, “I’ll watch with Cheetos and my cat on the couch. It’s not a party if your fingers aren’t covered in orange.”

VMAs 2015: Post-Awards Show, Diddy Throws An After Party

August 31, 2015

The MTV Video Music Awards tried their best to shock Sunday night. Miley Cyrus performed with a cadre of drag queens from “RuPaul’s Drag Race”; Nicki Minaj made up with Taylor Swift during a joint performance and started a brand-new cat fight with Cyrus; Justin Bieber cried, and many, many celebrities turned up in little to no clothing at all. What else is new?

After the last Moonman was handed out — Swift took Video of the Year for “Bad Blood” — the stars made their way to various after parties around Los Angeles: Jeremy Scott and Adidas Originals at Union Station, Republic Records at Ysabel and Diddy’s party at Supperclub.

The rapper was the veteran host of the evening. As Ja Rule put it,  “Diddy has been the party king since forever, like 1988.” That would be longer than some attendees have been alive.

Among those on the list for his blowout were Wiz Khalifa, Karrueche Tran, T-Pain, NeNe Leakes and Christina Milian.

“He’s crazy,” said Milian of the host. “The man jumps into pools at his kid’s party. It’s the one you want to go to. He’s always been very festive.”

K.D. Aubert agreed, saying, “I’ve partied with Diddy before. I should’ve brought my helmet.”

Taking a page out of Diddy’s book, Shad Moss, the artist formerly known as Bow Wow, showed up wearing his own clothing label, Asphalt Yacht Club.

“Puff always teaches me that self-branding is everything, and if you’ve got it, wear it,” he said. “Another thing I learned is to leave an impression on the crowd. If it’s your party on the flyer, the people want to see you. You have to set the tone.”

Kenya Moore said the Girl Power message of the show resonated with her most: “I think we should all support each other. It’s not easy out here.”

John Varvatos’ 12th Annual Stuart House Benefit Raises More Than $950,000

August 30, 2015

John Varvatos literally stopped traffic for the 12th Annual Stuart House Benefit last Sunday, an event which started as a small fund-raiser in the parking lot of his Melrose Avenue store and has since taken over the entire block.

“Eighteen-hundred people, it’s incredible,” Varvatos said of the ballooning event. “The city said, ‘You can’t do this, you’re stopping traffic,’ and they supported us to shut down Melrose which they don’t do for anyone else.”

Among those who turned out were KaDee Strickland, Beth Behrs, David Schwimmer, Bill Bellamy, Nick Simmons, Zach Braff, Keean Johnson, Maggie Grace, Lydia Hearst and the afternoon’s host, Chris Pine.

“For a child, it takes an incredible amount of courage to simply come forward and seek help and articulate events of trauma that they’ve experienced,” Pine said. “The Stuart House makes that experience as humane as possible in a system that often dehumanizes the exact person that they’re trying to heal,” said Pine of the center, which treats child victims of sexual abuse.

The “2 Broke Girls” actress Behrs also came out for the cause, saying, “Kat [Dennings] and I were literally like, ‘We’ll sell everything we own.’ I told them I would climb a mountain.”

Although the offer was generous, it wasn’t necessary due to an auction that raised $957,000 dollars from various items such as limited-edition tote bags from the event’s presenter Chrysler, a John Varvatos shopping spree, and a trip to Maui.

The event’s other big lure is the headliner performance, this year by seven-time Grammy-winner Ziggy Marley. Although for some of the younger guests, reggae wasn’t the preferred choice of entertainment. Kids in the Hasbro Studios tent got colorful hair extensions and airbrushed tattoos, played air hockey and witnessed tricks by magician Joel Ward.

Nevertheless, the oldest of Bob Marley’s offspring drew a gigantic crowd for an hour-long concert sprinkled with favorites like “Is This Love,” “Jammin” and “Moving Forward.”

Kerry Washington, Roland Emmerich Win Big at GLAAD Media Awards

March 23, 2015

The 26th annual GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday doled out rhodium statuettes to actress Kerry Washington and director Roland Emmerich, as well as “The Imitation Game” and television shows “Transparent” and “How To Get Away With Murder,” for creating accurate depictions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Comedienne Tig Notaro hosted the event at the Beverly Hilton, which included guests and presenters Ellen DeGeneres, Zoe Saldana, Channing Tatum, Portia de Rossi, Shonda Rhimes, Patricia Arquette, and Viola Davis and raised over $350,000 for the organization. Said DeGeneres, “This is the largest gathering of gay people in one room since yesterday. Thank you all for attending our annual meeting. Let me just go over some notes from our last one. Bring back short shorts. Check. Recruit Chris Hemsworth. Still working on that.”

Things got more serious, as they usually do, when Washington took the stage. “There’s so much power in story telling. We need more LGBT representation in the media and we need more employment of LGBT people in front of and behind the camera. I might be preaching to the choir, but I’m going to because people are going to click on a link to see what that woman from ‘Scandal’ said at that awards show,” said Washington of using her fame to raise awareness. “I know part of why I’m getting this award is because I play characters that belong to a second society and have been pushed to the margins. As a woman of color I don’t always have a choice about that, but I made the choice to play members of the LGBT community. I don’t decide to play them as a political choice, yet the characters often become political statements, because having your story told as a person of color, as a lesbian, a trans-person or any member of a disenfranchised community sadly often is still a radical idea.”

Despite an increase in the number of transgender actors and models working today, GLAAD’s chief executive officer and president Sarah Kate Ellis noted, “acceptance can’t come fast enough.”

Established Launches Fine Jewelry Line

March 10, 2015

Demi Moore, Gwen Stefani, Molly Sims and Hilary Duff were among the celebrities who turned out to fete Los Angeles-based handbag designer Nikki Erwin for the launch of her fine jewelry line, Established. Erwin, who was Jennifer Meyer’s first employee when she launched her jewelry line 11 years ago, has other friends in high places, including composer David Foster’s daughters Sara and Erin Foster, who hosted the party at Soho House West Hollywood. “Nikki’s my best friend from high school. When we were growing up she’d always make jewelry and get so many compliments,” said Erin. It was the sisters who urged mom of three Stefani to come out on a school night. “I don’t get out often, but they were like, ‘Come to my thing!’” Stefani told WWD. “A lot of friends are here and the jewelry is really beautiful. It’s definitely stuff that I would like and wear and I’m happy for the girl that made it. I don’t know her, but she seems to really have good taste.”

Rachel Zoe declared a rose gold and diamond razor blade-shaped necklace “sick” while Meyer said, “I’m into it. I can’t wait to purchase a few of the pieces. I love what she’s doing.” The collection of edgy, Art Deco-meets-rocker anklets, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, and rings range from $225 to $28,000 and is available for custom order on Erwin’s website. As for the name, the designer said, “I wanted a strong name that was like, ‘Whether you like it or not, I’m here.’” In going bold, she even drew a collection of men to her party, including Roger Federer and Ron Burkle.

Jerry Seinfeld Hosts Lunch for Baby Buggy Organization

March 05, 2015

On Wednesday afternoon, The Palm in Beverly Hills was teeming with comics, and Gwyneth Paltrow. Judd Apatow, Kevin Hart, Jason Bateman and Dax Shepard were all there because Jerry Seinfeld was hosting a lunch.

It was a serious lunch for a serious cause. Seinfeld was shilling for his wife Jessica’s Baby Buggy organization, which last year expanded to get more fathers involved in its mission to help needy families.

Though he was not wearing the puffy shirt made famous by one of his sitcom’s more well-known episodes, Seinfeld was in full pledge drive mode before a crowd that also included former costars Jason Alexander and Michael Richards.

“When the father’s involved in the kid’s life, the kid tends to do well. If not, the kids tend to go to jail. So it’s not good. It’s that simple,” Seinfeld said. “Especially if you’re in a challenged economic environment, it’s even harder to figure out ‘What am I supposed to do.’ Our hearts go out to these guys who were trying to figure this out.” After Dwyane Wade served more cold facts as the narrator of a sincere PSA video, Seinfeld encouraged the celebrities in the room to pose for pictures and help get the charity’s name out. And what about him, has he grown as a father since he became involved?

“I don’t know,” he told WWD. “Maybe you can answer that one. Do I seem like I’ve grown? If you can’t tell then I probably haven’t.”
