Emily Ratajkowski and Hari Nef Sizzle at Amazon's 2016 Emmys After-Party—See What Else Went Down

September 19, 2016

“Hi, I love you. You’re a goddess and a legend,” Hari Nef (above, right) cooed to Judith Light, who was giving photographers a second round on the orange carpet at The Sunset Tower late Sunday night. Nef was one of many who were eager to see her Transparent co-stars like Light, as well as Jeffrey Tambor and Jill Soloway (below, center, with Gaby Hoffmann), who showed up with the most coveted accessories: Emmy statuettes for Outstanding Lead Actor and Outstanding Director for a comedy series.

While Light confessed she would slip out early due to her work schedule, she achieved her one goal for the fête, telling InStyle, “I’m looking forward to seeing my friends, my Jill and Jeffery, and getting to hug them.”

And though the city was a party oasis, with options from Fox to HBO, the feeling of togetherness was felt even for young starlet Emily Robinson (below). “Tonight, I’m just staying here with the fam,” she said. “I would say, it sounds so cheesy, but my favorite part about these shows is that you get to spend time with your family, enjoy the work you’ve done, and celebrate each other.”

As the love for Transparent circulated the grounds, British newcomer Phoebe Waller-Bridge (below) was also receiving a lot of attention, and rightfully so, as Amazon recently added her series Fleabag to the roster.

“I love Fleabag,” Rob Delaney screamed from behind the camera line to Bridge who stunned in a Victoria's Secret dress. And earlier, Good Girls Revolt star Genevieve Angelson (below, with Odelya Halevi) echoed saying, “The show is like an even raunchier Bridget Jones. The acting is incredible. I laughed out loud even though I was by myself and sometimes you don’t laugh when you’re alone. I was laughing full-body and I really want to meet them.”

As for Bridge, she was simply eager to take selfies with Tambor who found himself settled in a corner of the party while guests danced to tunes from Rihanna and 50 Cent. As late night hunger was kept at bay with a fancy assortment of seafood and burgers, dessert trays of strawberry shortcake bars were either a sign of good fortune or a special request from Delaney, who joked before going in, “I hope they have some ice cream. If they don’t have ice cream, I’ll leave. It’ll be like a revolving door.”

For guests like Nef, a newfound lover of the vegan lifestyle, ice cream was not a requirement, only accompaniment from a fashionable squad including her Gucci-clad mom who doubled as a date and Emily Ratajkowski (first above, left) who showed up in Zac Posen. “We were texting and I was like, ‘Come to the Amazon party, girl,’” Nef said in Nili Lotan. “She’s waiting. She’s my girl. There’s going to be a moment.”

Niecy Nash Designed Her Own Dress for the Emmys and More from the Variety Pre-Emmys Party

September 17, 2016

“Are you going to stop and chat?” Amanda Peet whispered to Sarah Paulson as they held hands while walking Variety and Women in Film’s cream carpet for the annual pre-Emmy fête at Gracias Madres. Although the answer was a swift no, from the American Horror Story and The People Vs. O.J.: American Crime Story actress, who could blame her? The Emmy nominee was on her way to the hottest party in Los Angeles which drew other celebrities like Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Kate Walsh, Jaime King, Julianne Hough, Laverne Cox, Regina King, Donald Glover, Matt McGorry, and Cara Santana; just to name a few.

“I love this party because it’s women in film,” said Walsh who was hoping to nab a selfie with producer Jane Fleming. “We’re trying to see more of women in all branches of television, producing, directing, writing, and acting. It’s a great organization.”

While the female focus put Walsh in the perfect scenario to see influential female counterparts who aren’t always in front of the camera, Glover had a more refined approach to his party game plan. Decked out in Vivienne Westwood, the Atlanta creator, writer, actor, and producer mentioned the soiree was all about meaningful conversations for him. “Everybody is really smart and nice,” he said. “You’re not having a lot of small talk here which is cool. People are talking about big things.”

Nearby, the big thing on second-time nominee Niecy Nash’s mind was her look for Sunday saying, “Many years ago before I was a working actor I chicken-scratched my dress on my kids’ notebook paper and I said, ‘I’m going to win an award in this dress.’ This year I found a designer to interpret my chicken scratch, and I’m wearing that dress. And because I said ‘I’m going to win an award in it’ somebody better give me something. Even if it’s just a prize for the girl who showed up on the carpet first.”

Moments earlier Crazy Ex-Girlfriend creator Rachel Bloom joked about not having to get dolled up for the ceremony saying; “I’m going to go on a hike with my husband. That’s the thing about not being nominated. It’s like, ‘Well I don’t have to put on shape wear.’”

The light mood continued as Constance Zimmer who’s hoping to take home Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series mentioned, “I keep saying this, but I’m going to start the day with donuts as a gift to myself and a lot of those face masks and eye masks. Sure, why not? I’m just going to do everything lavish in the moment.”

Lauren Conrad Dishes on Her Latest Collection's L.A. Pop-Up and Why She Chose to Opt Out of NYFW

September 13, 2016

If you think New York has all of the fun during fashion week, then think again, because Lauren Conrad just brought the runway to California. Well, to be specific, she brought her 2016 LC Lauren Conrad Runway Collection for Kohl’s to a must-see pop-up shop at The Americana at Brand in L.A., open now through Sept. 15.

“We did New York Fashion Week last year, and it was amazing,” the designer told InStyle while sitting in an English garden created just for the store. “I thought it would be fun to bring it to the other coast this year because this collection is really all about the customers. We’re having this go on for a week, and I can meet a lot of the people that have supported the brand and shop the collection along with them, and get feedback. I like the idea of making it a weeklong event here.”

To imagine the capsule, think of a color palette featuring deep wine to light rose hues, creams, black, and lilac on apparel including feminine shorts, dresses, and tops, as well as an assortment of handbags and footwear that all have a vintage spirit. With prices ranging from $14 to $269, the O.C. native describes each look as “elevated” and “very fall, but still true to the brand.” Sound good? Then, make an appointment to view the collection (or simply walk up if you're feeling lucky) along with all of the key elements to making a romantic’s dream closet come true inside LC’s glass pod.

On her favorite piece from the capsule, Conrad singled out a little pink number saying, “I really love the slip dress we did. It was the first one I wanted to wear. I wore it to the CFDA Awards and I just really love it. I’m really into a slip dress right now. I think they’re so beautiful.”

For all of those who have a certain SoCal girl as their style icon and a desire to pull off a similar vibe without being a total carbon copy, Conrad hints, “I like them worn really simply.”

Kendall Jenner Hosts an Epic L.A. Fête in All Black, Parties with Big Sister Kim Kardashian

July 15, 2016

If you’re looking to party like a Kardashian-Jenner, then the 69th and 70th floors of Los Angeles's U.S. Bank Tower are for you. Home to OUE Skyspace L.A., the space welcomed Kendall Jenner (in a sleek all-black ensemble) as host for a celebratory red carpet affair on Thursday night. Also on hand: big sis Kim Kardashian West (below) as well as Calvin Harris and Shailene Woodley.

After a plethora of pictures and videos documented a sing-along session to Kanye West tracks like “Famous,” the model took the stage to fulfill her hosting duties. “Welcome to OUE L.A.! I’m so excited to be here and I’m so excited to have all my friends out,” she said of Moises Arias and Jaden Smith, who waited for her in a roped off section. “We’re going to ride the slide, and we’re so excited to see Travis Scott perform. I hope everyone has an amazing time.”

Yes, you read that correctly. As if the 360-degree view of the city weren’t enough, the new hot spot features a transparent slide connected to the venue to enhance the experience. Think nostalgic feels of childhood parks, but with a sparkling view of the city instead.

While Floyd Mayweather and AnnaLynne McCord had a chance to preview the open deck before others, McCord came back for more sliding. “I’m excited to do the slide. I will admit I got a chance to do it in the pre-opening of the building. But it’s a lot of fun,” she told InStyle.

After a live performance from Mia Moretti and the Dolls, Travis Scott ordered two life-size Coachella-esque Cacti on stage, causing Moretti to say, “I wish those were mine.”

One song into his set, the “Uber Everywhere” rapper stopped his music due to lackluster support from the crowd saying, “L.A., you’re not at church. You’re not at a book club. You’re at a mini-show.” Showing him their best with cheers, the Houston-native continued without an interruption.

After the rapping came to a close with the hit “Antidote,” Moretti took the stage again to premiere Katy Perry’s new single "Rise" for the crowd, which included Matt Cook, Johnny Wujek, and Harris.

Kerri Walsh Jennings on Being Honest Company's Very First Ambassador

July 02, 2016

The Honest Company struck gold when it named Kerri Walsh Jennings it’s very first brand ambassador. The three-time Olympic gold medalist, who’s looking to make that number four during the summer in Rio de Janeiro, invited InStyle to her beach home. During a break from the photo shoot that will officially take the union from paper agreement to public, the volleyball victor shared her love of all things Honest including her new boss Jessica Alba as well as her favorite physical and mental workouts to stay game ready.

“I’ve been a fan and a user of the brand since they came out,” the Olympian beamed while sitting on a yellow yoga ball in her backyard. “I’m such a fan of Jessica. I met her a little while ago. It was rad. She’s juggling her career as an actress; she’s juggling her wife situation and her mommy situation. I’m so impressed by her. She does it all with a smile, she does it all with a lot of heart, and she’s very smart.”

Sans the all-star athlete title, Alba and Jennings are totally twinning. Both are California natives, moms, and share a fiery passion for SPF—the latter of which is the cause for their collab. While Jennings won’t have a hard time convincing us to slather on the protective stuff (we all know the benefits!), she admits it hasn’t always been easy getting her three kids to commit to healthy skin everyday. “Before we leave the house we wear our sunscreen,” she says. “Sometimes it’s a tug of war with the kids, but they understand the value. We’re a really big believer in putting it on before you leave the house, that way you do it right.”

When it comes to training for the upcoming Olympics, there is no struggle. Jennings stays focused by energizing with honey sticks, Pilates, cardio on the shoreline, and mental exercises. “Everyone thinks it’s physical. Everyone is strong, fast, jumps high, [and] hits hard," she says. "The differentiator is the mental game. So we put a really big premium on working with a sports psychologist, working on my mindfulness training, my meditation, having a couple of times of day where I take 10 slow deep breaths. Every deep breath is a reset, you know, physiologically it gets you relaxed; it gets you re-centered and refocused.”

And of course there’s nothing better than following your bliss with a few loved ones. “The coolest thing is my kids join me," the Olympics medal-winner says. "They’ll sit there for like 30 seconds and then say, ‘Are we done?’ It’s really sweet.”

Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn Dish on Their Laid-back Mother's Day Plans

May 07, 2016

Earlier on the blue carpet, the mom of three had a chat about upcoming Mother’s Day plans with Hudson saying, “I have an idea. I’ll ride my bike over to your house. Then the boys will all bring us breakfast in your bed because I like your bed better than mine. Oh yeah.” Hawn also hinted towards the perfect gift asking, “You were giving me that bed, remember? Did you change your mind?”

After agreeing that the idea was "perfect," Hudson, who rocked a fresh bob haircut, off the shoulder lace ensemble, and metallic gold nails, slipped into the crowd. She later gave the audience a stirring Prince tribute by performing Sinead O’Connor's “Nothing Compares 2 U”. If that wasn’t enough, guests were also in store for a set from Jesse Jo Stark and gifted custom portraits by Los Angeles artist Robert Vargas.

No kidding around, Friday night was all about children at Goldie Hawn’s Annual Goldie’s Love In For Kids event benefitting the MindUp program. And Ron Burkle’s Green Acres estate in Beverly Hills served as the playground. The evening drew an assortment of stars such as partner Kurt Russell, daughter Kate Hudson, Nicole Richie, Demi Moore, Sylvester Stallone, Camila Alves, Rachel Zoe, honoree Russell Simmons and more who were all clothed in impressive designer threads.

However, the most notable of all belonged to Hawn as it gave her another impressive bullet point to add to her resume. “I’m wearing me,” the actress said of her fuchsia bell-bottom pantsuit and purple top. “The designing experience was so great because you get to dream it, you get to draw it, and you’ve got an amazing seamstress and dressmaker. When she brings it, you say, ‘Oh my god, it’s fantastic.'"

Let's Marvel at Emily VanCamp's Look from the Captain America: Civil War L.A. Premiere

April 13, 2016

Tuesday night's L.A. premiere of Captain America: Civil War created a display of Hollywood's finest gents, what with stars like Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, and Chris Evans all hitting the red carpet in sharp, neatly tailored suits. But they weren't the only ones turning heads at the Dolby Theater. The affair also produced an eye-catching red carpet ensemble from co-star Emily VanCamp, who plays Sharon Carter (aka Agent 13) in the film. She dazzled in a J. Mendel dress that featured a halter-style neckline, a cutout in the front, and a wide slit, and she accessorized with black ankle-strap Jimmy Choo heels and an assortment of gilded Tiffany jewels.

“The shoes are kind of comfortable and that’s a rarity,” she told InStyle at the event. “I feel good in [my look] and I need to feel good in what I’m wearing because we’re sitting to watch the movie for a couple of hours.”

The former Revenge actress's outfit also paired well with her natural beauty look. A nude lip, rosy cheeks, and a soft glow may be the 29-year-old star's red carpet M.O., but don't think she's a total girl's girl when it comes to makeup. “I can be quite tomboyish so it’s not always my focus I’ll say. I keep it pretty simple," she said.

You could tell that VanCamp was in good spirits, as were her hunky castmates, especially Mackie. Hand in hand with his smiling wife, he swept past reporters as he joked, “I’m with my date—she’s aggravated,” and then joined Evans and Downey Jr. on the red carpet.

Swoon!

Inside InStyle's Epic 2016 Oscar Viewing Party

March 29, 2016

Didn't snag an Academy Awards invite this year? Well, sometimes the viewing party is quite a bit more fun (and raucous, we might add). That was the case with InStyle's 17th annual viewing party, hosted this year at the Baltaire in Los Angeles.

First things first: there were plenty of viewing favors to be had including six flavors of popcorn and a killer candy station along with a delicious selection of Santa Margherita Wines's pinot grigio, Chianti, and prosecco rotation. Both were inspiration enough to get stars like Tamera Mowry-Housley (above), Candice Patton (below), Katharine McPhee, Joey King, and Cara Santana circulating throughout. But it turns out with red carpets abounding, even the stars can get nervous like us.

“I’m very shy, innately shy, that’s why I brought my publicist,” Patton said as she sat in a black draped dress with a glass of wine nearby. “She’s really good at grabbing people like, ‘Hi meet Candice.’ But me alone, I’m a girl that’s so shy.”

Mowry-Housley, who arrived with her husband Adam agreed saying, “I’m a very private person.” And while it’s admittedly hard to come out of her shell, she’s picked up the skill by flashing her pearly whites with a smile and saying, “Hey, I’m a fan and I love your work.”

The trick even scored a meet with Lady Gaga for one of her co-hosts of The Real. “I remember one time Adrienne [Bailon] and I were at a Golden Globes party, and she wanted to meet Lady Gaga. She was very shy, and I was the one who introduced them and it was the first time I met Lady Gaga as well,” Mowry-Housley recalled. Jesse Metcalfe and girlfriend Cara Santana made a stunning appearance at the party, too.

Although Jack Falahee confessed he's not immune to going “cheesy." Perhaps he'll throw in an ice-breaker like: “How much does a polar bear weigh?” Although, he didn't have to resort to random trivia to survive the night. He was surrounded by cast mates from How to Get Away with Murder like Kendrick Sampson, Matt McGorry, and Aja Naomi King, who confessed tonight was her night to fan-girl over Leonardo DiCaprio.

“I really hope he gets an Oscar,” she said. “He doesn’t need it. He does great work all the time, it’s not like he’s ever going to stop working, but I would love for him to get it.”

And she wasn’t alone. As the Academy Award Winner for Best Actor was announced (DiCaprio took home the golden statue), everyone stopped what they were doing including trying on their black velvet Toms shoes (created exclusively for InStyle's Oscar viewing party) or diving into their plates from the buffet style dinner to burst into a cheering frenzy. The excitement was especially true for Aimee Garcia, who remembered an early career moment with The Revenant lead.

“I screen tested for Romeo + Juliet back in the day," Garcia said, of the DiCaprio romance flick. "It was Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, Christina Ricci, Claire Danes, and me. Not a lot of people know that.”

Missy Elliott and Pharrell Williams Reunite at Warner Music Group's Grammys After-Party

March 16, 2016

After Pitbull and Sofia Vergara hit the stage at the 2016 Grammys, stars like Missy Elliott and Pharrell Williams dashed to the late-into-the-night stream of after-parties that winners and nominees alike attended. At Warner Music Group’s soiree at Milk Studios in L.A., Elliott not only hit the stage for a raucous performance, but also did so with a little extra gloss.

“I was only supposed to play 15 minutes,” Elliott told the crowd onstage. Between her swaying blue and burgundy hair, fluttering eyelash extensions, and rapping hits like "Get Ur Freak On," “Hot Boyz,” "Work It," and "WTF (Where They From)" through glittering lips that matched her microphone, she exclaimed, “I’m here to have fun,” which was evident in her very glam look.

Killer performances aside, beauty was on the tip of everyone's tongue. “I never wear eyelashes, I’m so against eyelashes,” Eugena Washington told InStyle. The model and self-proclaimed beauty guru has been practicing her natural eyelash game since the 10th grade, which means plenty of time to develop tips and tricks. “These are all of my lashes,” she said without batting an eye. “You have to build your eyelashes. It’s all about building. I do one eye. I let it sit. Then I do the base of the other eye, and I just keep building towards the tips. Oh, and before I do mascara, I put vitamin E oil on my lashes. It makes them grow and keeps them conditioned. It also adds an extra thick coat before you put on your mascara. It makes your lashes thicker.”

While actress Holland Roden isn’t exactly anti-fake lashes, she also swore by mascara, specifically L'Oreal Telescopic and conditioning. “I actually condition them with regular conditioner,” she said. “I put one of those makeup pads on the lower part of my eye. Close my eyes, just put a little bit of conditioner, and keep it on for 30 seconds. Then I wipe it off with another pad, so the conditioner doesn’t actually get in my eye.”

For those that like to have an opulent upgrade for nights out, singers JoJo and Sevyn Streeter were there to represent. “I don’t wear half of this stuff every day, but I do wear a good lash for events,” said Streeter. “I will give a secret to everybody. You don’t have to spend a grip of money on lashes. Go to CVS or Rite Aid and get a pair of their lashes, they’re just as good.

“I like the drama,” JoJo told InStyle. “I really dig Ardell Wispies; those happen to be my favorite. I love Lilly Lashes too. You can use them a lot.”

Zendaya and Christina Milian Bring the Wow Factor to Essence's 7th Annual Black Women in Music Celebration

February 12, 2016

Nights leading up to the Grammy Awards are all about mirroring the big event with honors, stylish threads, and live performances; and the 7th annual Essence Black Women in Music celebration delivered on all of those fronts Thursday night in L.A. The event included a mini concert from nominated songbirds Andra Day and Jazmine Sullivan, and drew names like Zendaya, Christina Milian, Yara Shahidi, Corinne Bailey Rae, Kendra Foster, MC Lyte, and Lalah Hathaway to the Avalon Hollywood.

But before the serenading began with ballads like “Forever Don’t Last,” a true story of losing at love by Sullivan, the Philadelphia native also told InStyle how she was no stranger to losing in the entertainment business. “I’ve had a billion nos before I had a yes,” she said. “People who have yet to achieve their dreams need to keep pushing and keep trying. I think that’s true for every artist, every star, everybody that you see out on the forefront. They had to get a no before they got a yes. So just keep pushing.”

Rae, who took the violet carpet in a black top and glittering Gucci pants, which were just as golden as her Grammy awards for Best R&B Performance and Album of the Year, agreed. “I think protecting [your dream] is really important,” she said. And while the British songstress echoed sentiments of perseverance for dream chasers, she went a step further in her encouragement saying, “Life is full of a lot of change; that’s the only certain thing. So protect your dream, but don’t define yourself by it. I think there’s so much luck in success, I don’t think people talk about that. People say everything they ever do is well-deserved, but I think life is a wheel of fortune. Sometimes you’re going higher and higher, and sometimes you’re going low and getting trapped under. It’s cyclical in that way. Success is a great thing, but some people aren’t successful and it’s not their fault.”

If you’re wondering which category you fall in, Lyte suggests asking, “Is it meant for you?”

“Often people get caught up in other people’s dreams,” she said. “I would just ask what’s really your purpose. For those that are sure, I would say to work hard at it.”

So, don’t worry if you haven’t struck your equivalent to a gilded gramophone... yet. The consensus of the night was to keep playing your hand. And if you need more inspiration, let Foster, who raised funds online for her debut solo album and picked up her first nom for lyrics to D’Angelo and The Vanguard’s “Really Love,” inspire. A "no" is eventually a prelude to a yes. “Keep pushing and working for it," she said. “You will be surprised pleasantly someday.

Christian Siriano Takes on Minnie Mouse's Polka Dots

January 24, 2016

When it comes to fashion and timing, a true icon knows how to hit the mark right on the dot. So it was no shock that Minnie Mouse, the ultimate pioneer of the polka print, celebrated National Polka Dot Day by unveiling a bespoke dress by designer Christian Siriano. However, it was a surprise that the chic mouse traded in her signature white dots on red for oversized white bows embellished with Swarovski crystals and magenta fabric at the Minnie Mouse Rocks the Dots Art and Fashion Exhibit

“I wanted to do something that was a little bit different since that’s what she wears every day,” said CFDA member Siriano. “It still keeps that polka dot feel, but elevating it. We wanted to make a really cool party dress that was a little bit downtown cool because I knew this space was going to be a little bit more raw and different.”

That space was the Paper Agency in downtown Los Angeles. As an art gallery, the location gets a fair share of makeovers, but probably none as whimsical as the white wooden fence that welcomed guests for the evening’s red carpet event hosted by Sarah Hyland in honor of Minnie Mouse’s contributions to fashion. “I think Minnie has always been that one style girl that everyone is inspired by,” Siriano said. “She takes risks, wears bold colors, she’s playful, and travels around the world.”

Noteworthy followers of MM include Georgia May Jagger, Madonna, Twiggy, and Naomi Campbell, who all have their portraits on display at the fashion and art installation, as well as sketches, and gowns that Minnie has worn on every continent except Antarctica. When you’re looking to join the masses with at least one dotted garment as a nod to Minnie, look no further than British it-girl Alexa Chung for instruction. According to Siriano, “Girls like Alexa make polka dots look cool and fresh even though it’s young and playful. It takes a certain person to make polka dots look, not campy.”

And if the sartorial step isn’t enough for you, there are other ways to show your devotion to Disney such as a sneak peak of collaborations with Sephora, Ugg, Kate Spade, and Lauren Conrad. Besides, there are also plenty of selfie opportunities at the pop-up and the chance to shop exclusive items like key chains, ear buds, necklaces, shirts, and mugs—polka dots included, of course.
