Hollywood honored those who create their film looks at the 18th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards at the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday. Not one to miss a fashion event, student Kiernan Shipka went out on a school night to attend.
“This is one of the best-dressed events of the year, all year-round,” Shipka said. “I feel like every year you see some really cool designs. Obviously, Janie Bryant always looks stunning. Mindy Kaling always looks amazing.”
And although “The Mindy Project” actress didn’t give her Salvador Perez gown a proper step-and-repeat moment at the Lacoste-hosted ceremony, she didn’t miss a beat at the podium.
“Man, I’m so honored and surprised to be here, joining the ranks of recent winners Anne Hathaway, Kate Beckinsale,” she said. “Wait, one second. I’m getting a text. It’s my agent. What award am I getting? I’m being honored with the Pillsbury Award for Best Muffin Top.”
Next, costume designer Ellen Mirojnick picked up the Career Achievement award. Earlier, “The Knick” designer noted that aspiring designers should “love to tell stories, love to be spontaneous, to actually not get married to any particular idea. It’s always very interesting when you change your mind at the last minute.”
Quentin Tarantino was also there to offer impromptu sartorial tips while picking up the honor for Distinguished Collaborator. “I’ve always taken the costumes in my films very seriously,” he said. “That was one of the reasons why I made such a big deal about putting all the characters in ‘Reservoir Dogs’ in black suits. You know, every guy looks better in a black suit. They just kind of do.”
Other winners included Jenny Eagan (“Beasts of No Nation”), Paco Delgado (“The Danish Girl”), Jenny Beavan (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), Lou Eyrich (“American Horror Story: Hotel”), Michele Clapton (“Game of Thrones”), Julie Vogel (“Most Interesting Man in the World Wins on Land, Sea & Air, Dos Equis Commercial”) and Edwina Pellikka for the Distinguished Service Award.
The night ended with Cate Blanchett receiving the Lacoste Spotlight Award. She recalled her sister, who had a stint as a costume designer, saying, “In the end, it’s those costume fittings, those private clandestine moments where you actually get to manifest the psychological things you’ve been talking about. You make them with the costume designer. The costume designer, as you all know, works from the inside out. Not from the outside in.”
